Generations and Gender Programme – From a European Initiative to a Leading Research Infrastructure
Generations and Gender Programme (GGP) is an international social research infrastructure with roots dating back to the year 2000. It was established to create a comprehensive platform for studying demographic transformations in Europe. Initially, under the auspices of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), it brought together 11 research institutions from various countries across the continent. Since 2009, the programme has been coordinated by the Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI – Nederlands Interdisciplinair Demografisch Instituut). This step significantly contributed to consolidating GGP’s activities and strengthening its position within the international scientific community.
Key Programme Elements
The "Generations and Gender" Survey
An international panel survey conducted on large representative samples of individuals aged 18–59. The survey covers topics such as family biographies, intergenerational relationships, social roles of women and men, reproductive behaviors and plans, health and well-being, as well as living conditions and professional activity. The data obtained from the survey is made available to researchers worldwide in open access, exclusively for scientific purposes.
Contextual Database
A publicly available collection of macroeconomic and social indicators for the countries where the "Generations and Gender" survey is conducted. It enables the analysis of the context in which individuals' lives unfold.
SGH – The Polish Partner of GGP
The Warsaw School of Economics (SGH) has been a member of the GGP consortium since 2009 and represents Poland in this significant research initiative. This membership provides Polish researchers with direct access to the unique data collected within the programme, enabling advanced studies on Polish families and society. The project is carried out under the programme “Support for the Participation of Polish Research Teams in International Research Infrastructure Projects.”
